CooliBlade AURORA-XPassive thermosyphon heat sink for narrow air ducts

AURORA-X is an all-aluminium, passive two-phase heat sink that replaces a skived or extruded aluminium heat sink in a narrow air duct, with the same footprint and mounting. A sealed NEOcore‑X channel built into the baseplate spreads module heat in both directions across the heat sink, so the peak temperature the modules see is lower.

More SiC power in the same narrow air duct and footprint.

CooliBlade AURORA-X: a flat aluminium heat sink with six power modules mounted on its baseplate, three in the lower row and three in the upper row.

Measured with three SEMiX 3p+ form factor modules. See the data

24°C

cooler than a skived aluminium heat sink of the same form factor, at the same load and airflow.

[Measured. Three SEMiX 3p+ form factor modules, 4 200 W total load (1 400 W per module), 40 °C ambient, 600 m³/h. Tc compared to SEMiX603GB12E4SiCp specifications.]

More power before the limit

through the same three modules before they reach their junction temperature limit. That is 23 % more.

[Measured. 4 470 W against 3 620 W of losses at rated Tj 150 °C. Same modules, 40 °C ambient, 600 m³/h, skived aluminium reference of identical form factor.]

The problem

SiC puts more heat into the same duct

Silicon carbide lets drives and converters push more power through the same module packages. In a narrow air duct the heat sink cannot grow to match.

At these power densities solid aluminium cannot move heat sideways fast enough. Each module heats its own patch of baseplate, skived and extruded heat sinks reach their limit, and the hottest module position sets the derating for the whole stack.

How it works

One channel.
One baseplate.

One shared NEOcore evaporator is built straight into the aluminium baseplate, and every channel draws on it. Heat leaves each module and spreads in both directions at once, not only along the fins.

Loading the 3D model
  1. 1Heat enters the baseplateThe power modules mount directly on the aluminium evaporator base.
  2. 2The fluid boilsUnder each module the working fluid boils, absorbing heat without a large rise in temperature.
  3. 3Vapour risesIt rises into the upper part of the channel and condenses on the wall facing the fins.
  4. 4Gravity returns itThe fins pass the heat to the air. The condensate runs back down to the pool, and the cycle repeats.

Illustrative, not simulated. Base shown transparent: heat from the power modules boils the acetone in the shared NEOcore evaporator, the vapour rises and condenses on the wall facing the fins, and the condensate runs back down to the pool. Speeds and bubble counts are illustrative. Example module layout. A gravity-assisted thermosyphon, so it suits layouts where the hottest modules sit in the lower area of the heat sink.

How NEOcore works
Measured

Same modules, same envelope, more power

Measured against a skived aluminium heat sink of identical form factor, at identical airflow and load. First what it does to the module temperature, then where the heat goes.

Where the heat goes

Surface temperature across the heat sink under identical load and airflow. Drag to compare.

Skived aluminium reference: three dark red hot spots above the lower modules, cooler blue-green elsewhere.
AURORA-X: smaller, cooler hot spots under the lower modules, with heat spread more evenly across the plate.

Surface temperature [°C]

The aluminium reference concentrates heat into hot spots above each module. The NEOcore-X channel distributes it across the heat sink structure, so the peak the modules see is lower.

[Measured. Same load and airflow for both heat sinks.]

[Measured. Three SEMiX 3p+ form factor modules against a skived aluminium reference, Tc compared to SEMiX603GB12E4SiCp specifications, 40 °C ambient, 600 m³/h. Temperature figure at 4 200 W total load, 1 400 W per module. Power figure at rated Tj 150 °C: 4 470 W vs 3 620 W of losses.]

Applications

How AURORA-X solves it in your application

Wide air duct with height to spend? CooliBlade ULTIMA-X carries the NEOcore channel up into a tall fin stack. See ULTIMA-X

What you get

Swap the heat sink.
Keep everything else.

Drop-in replacementSame footprint and mounting as the aluminium heat sink it replaces. No redesign around the heat sink.
All aluminium, fully passiveNo copper, no pump loop, no epoxy, no moving parts.
Mounts like an aluminium heat sinkIP65-compatible mounting, so the duct stays sealed from the electronics side.
Every unit testedThe last station on our production line is a performance test bench. Nothing ships without passing it.

Built to your layout

Dimensions, height and the channel are shaped to your module layout and enclosure. Send them as they are; we shape the evaporator to fit them at the design stage, not the reverse.

If a passive thermal channel does not close the gap in your cabinet, we will say so.

Questions

AURORA-X questions engineers ask

Can AURORA-X replace my skived or extruded heat sink?

Yes, that is what it is built for: the same footprint and mounting as the aluminium heat sink it replaces, in a narrow air duct.

Does orientation matter?

Yes. AURORA-X is a gravity-assisted thermosyphon, so it suits layouts where the hot components sit in the lower area of the heat sink. Send us your layout and we will tell you whether it fits.

What was AURORA-X measured with?

Three SEMiX 3p+ form factor modules against a skived aluminium reference of identical form factor, at 40 °C ambient and 600 m³/h, with case temperature compared to SEMiX603GB12E4SiCp specifications.

How is AURORA-X different from ULTIMA-X?

AURORA-X is for narrow or height-limited ducts: the channel sits inside the baseplate of a conventional heat sink form factor. ULTIMA-X is for wide ducts: pipes carry the channel up into a tall fin stack.

Does AURORA-X need a pump or maintenance?

No. It is all aluminium and fully passive: no pump loop, no copper, no epoxy and no moving parts.
